The Dwarven Cities, also known as the Kingdom of the Dwarves and the Kingdom of the Free Dwarves is one of the seven nations on the continent of Kyse. It is a nation marked by high mountains, rolling hills, and a fierce winter. The continent's largest concentration of Dwarves lives in the nation. It is bordered by the Tyvian League to the West, the Marintine Republic to the South, and the Forsaken North.

The Dwarven Cities maintains a cool relationship with it's neighbors, and a militaristic and isolationist culture is maintained within the ruling class of the nation, with trade being open to a select few nations and ships.

History

Early History

In the beginning of known history, the Dwarves of Kyse had always called the mountain ranges and the far north their home, and since about 5000 BIU have been known to be excellent stonemasons and smiths. They were constantly switching between cold and warm relations between their elven and halfling neighbors. It is thought at this time that the Dwarves were living like nomads in the mountains and cities were only places to trade wares and to hold clan meetings.

in approximately 2500 BIU the Dwarves became minor partner in the human conquest of the continent, being their allies, Dwarven influence over the continent was major and pronounced, it was also around this time that alcohol was introduced to Dwarven society, though it was typically used in a ceremonial context like festivals and marriages.

After The Sinking in about 1000 BIU the Dwarves were the first to attempt the fight against the Dragonborn invaders, yet they failed and their army was routed during the Kashadi Desert Campaign, ending both the empire's military dominance and the Dwarf-Human partnership swiftly came to an end when the human army abruptly annexed all the Dwarven lands they could.

Era of Strife

During this time, the most that is known about Dwarven society is the fact that feudal lords were constantly fighting over the Northern Mountains and little societal advancement was taking place. The most powerful lords were the ones that presided over the largest Dwarven cities, these being the Dukes of Azmar, Gwynnt, and Araight.

In approximately 230 BIU Axeholm II, Son of Axeholm I was born and becomes the ruler of the city of Gwynnt after his father retired the title due to old age

Era of War and Unity

In 54 BIU the Dwarves were the first to face the onslaught of undead, Drow, and Orcish raids and conquests. Under Axeholm II the Dwarves formed a united front to delay the undead advance until a united coalition could be formed with the other nations on Kyse. Millions of Dwarves lost their lives and many more lost their property in the flight from their homeland.

Eventually, thanks to the intervention from a group of adventurers, the Dwarves were able to recover most of their homeland and began to lead the first sorties north. After the Battle of the Rhol Peninsula Axeholm II was coronated as King of the Dwarves. Once the war ended the Dwarves began to rebuild, goodwill between the other nations ensured they could

Government

In the selection of a king, the Dwarven Moot will convene and will vote among themselves to determine who will be granted kingship. A majority vote must occur to elect a king. Once a king is elected, they must be coronated in the ancient capital of Gwynnt. Once elected and coronated, the king is the feudal ruler of the kingdom and may assign lands to whoever he deems fit.

Cities are either ruled over by a local lord, a local council of nobles, or an appointed mayor. They also collect tax from the local area known as a province.

Small villages and towns are under the provincial control of their local councils or the lords, and day to day control is handled by either a village elder, a bailiff, or an elected mayor, depending on size.

Military

The Dwarven military is a feudal military, meaning that each unit is funded by and is loyal to their provincial lord. Depending on the province, the quality and quantity of troops will be affected. The size of the Dwarven army in peacetime tends to have an average of 50,000 soldiers and sailors in service.

Conscription is active in the country, with service to the king being a requirement for five years after turning 40, provincial lords may also add another five years to this tenure after their national service, adding up to an average of 10 years of military service per dwarf.

Army

The army makes up most of the Dwarven military and units tend to be made up of a mix of lightly-trained peasantry, professional full-time soldiers, and housecarls. The most common weapons seen in the hands of Dwarven soldiers tend to be battleaxes, hammers, and spears.

The Army is lead by an elite warrior and strategist typically ranked as Lord Commander of the Dwarven Army.

Ranks

Dwarven military organization is rather traditional and informal. Military ranks tend to be more associated with position than merit. The ranks, in ascending order, are as follows (Professional/Levy):

  • Recruit - Used to denote a professional soldier or levied dwarf in training
  • Branded/Linefiller - Low-ranking enlisted man. Professional servicemen tend to have their helms branded, thus the name.
  • Ironbranded/Ironfile - Soldiers that have served for a while, most levy tend to not advance after this rank.
  • Sergeant - Mid-ranking professional soldiers, these men are career military and tend to lead most hinterland patrols and village guard details.
  • Captain - Most field officers of common birth are of this rank, with most of those who hold not being able to progress past due to aristocratic barriers. These officers tend to lead companies in the field
  • Stonecaptain - Knighted vanguards tend to fill this rank. These officer lead multiple companies and garrison-wards.
    • Housecarl - Warriors of exceptional skill, typically the guards of lords. May also lead a company.
  • Thane - High ranking officers who end up in charge of whole garrisons or smaller armies. Most in this positions are distant relatives of the king or a lord.
  • Lord Commander - The leader of the Dwarven Army

Navy

The navy is a small service, with only having 2 ports to launch out of (Azmar and Fort Degarton) the navy exists mainly to stop smuggling and piracy. Thus, the navy is a national apparatus and not a provincial one.
